Trademark Polythene’s Innovative Recycling Partnership.
In an era where sustainability is no longer optional but essential, Trademark Polythene is proud to showcase our closed-loop recycling initiative. This case study highlights how we’re partnering with our major clients to revolutionise plastic waste management and create a more sustainable future for the packaging industry.
The Challenge
As awareness of plastic pollution grows, businesses are under increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact. Many of our clients were grappling with significant amounts of internal polythene waste, facing both disposal costs and the ethical dilemma of contributing to landfill. Additionally, with the introduction of the UK Plastic Packaging Tax, there was a financial incentive to incorporate more recycled content into their packaging.
Our Solution: Closed-Loop Recycling
Recognising this challenge as an opportunity, Trademark Polythene developed a closed-loop recycling program. Here’s how it works:
- Collection: We set up a system to collect internal waste polythene from our participating clients.
- Processing: The collected waste is transported to our recycling facility, where it’s cleaned and processed.
- Remanufacturing: The recycled polythene is then used to create new products for the same clients.
- Delivery: The new products, made from the client’s own recycled waste, are delivered back to them.
This process embodies the essence of closed-loop recycling, where plastic is reprocessed and the recyclate produced is used to manufacture another product in the same product category.
The Results
The impact of this initiative has been significant:
- In the last 12 months, we’ve collected and recycled in excess of 51 tonnes of waste polythene.
- This recycled material has replaced the need for virgin grade polythene, significantly reducing our and out clients environmental footprint.
- We’ve helped divert 51 tonnes of plastic from landfills, contributing to waste reduction goals.
- Our clients have avoided paying the Plastic Packaging Tax on these recycled materials, offering them financial benefits alongside environmental ones.
Client Benefits
Our partners in this initiative have experienced numerous advantages:
- Cost Savings: Reduced waste disposal costs and avoidance of the Plastic Packaging Tax.
- Enhanced Sustainability: A tangible way to improve their environmental credentials and meet CSR goals.
- Simplified Waste Management: We handle the collection and recycling, streamlining their operations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Easier adherence to increasing environmental regulations.
- Brand Image: Improved public perception as environmentally responsible businesses.
Case in Point: Client X
One of our major clients, let’s call them Client X, was generating about 10 tonnes of polythene waste annually. By partnering with us:
- They’ve redirected all 10 tonnes from landfill to be recycled
- We’ve created new polythene for them using this recycled material.
- They’ve saved approximately £2,000 in Plastic Packaging Tax (at £200 per tonne).
- Their sustainability report now showcases a 100% recycling rate for their polythene waste.
At Trademark Polythene, we believe that true sustainability comes from reimagining our relationship with materials. Our closed-loop recycling initiative is more than just a waste management solution – it’s a new way of thinking about resources and responsibility.
By turning polythene waste into a valuable resource, we’re not just helping our clients meet their sustainability goals; we’re paving the way for a more circular, sustainable future for the packaging industry.
